FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I’m not sick, should I see a chiropractor?
Yes. Symptoms are not a good way to judge health because they may not surface for months or years after nerve stress begins. When symptoms finally occur, some of the damage may already be chronic.

What will happen if I only go once?
You will probably get some benefit from one adjustment but if the subluxation remains, spinal dysfunction will continue. We explain the treatment options from short-term pain relief to long term health benefits.

Is chiropractic addicting?
Only in the sense of the feeling you get from being more balanced, less stressed and more energetic as a result of periodic chiropractic care.

At what age should you see a chiropractor?
We have seen newborns that needed adjustments especially after difficult births. Just visualize the neck and shoulders during the birth process. Subluxations can occur at any age.

Do adjustments hurt?
An adjustment is a very simple process of moving a joint similar to cracking your knuckle. We utilize a variety of gentle adjusting techniques. We have had small children who fell asleep on the ride over to our office. We adjusted them and the parents couldn’t believe the adjustment didn’t even wake them.

How often should I get adjusted?
As soon as spinal nerve stress begins. The problem is that symptoms often don’t occur until the later stages. This is why most of our patients get “checked” periodically just like regular dental checkups.

What is the sound an adjustment sometimes makes?
Some techniques do not create any sounds. Others create a sound similar to popping knuckles. The sound has little to do with the adjustment. As a slight joint movement forms a vacuum, gasses are released creating the sound. This is why people who self “pop” their spine is really not correcting the problem.

When do I see my MD or Chiropractor?
Chiropractors do not actually treat diseases. They help improve the body’s ability to prevent and fight off illness. We feel you should first be sure you do not have nerve stress that could lower your natural resistance. We routinely refer or recommend you see a medical doctor when necessary. In the case of chronic conditions, patients often see both concurrently. I feel you should be weary of a chiropractor or medical doctor who is strongly opposed to you consulting the other profession for evaluation.

Can someone who had back surgery see a chiropractor?
Yes. Because you had surgery on one level of your spine you can still have subluxations at the remaining levels. Often scar tissue occurs at the injury site. When the symptoms reoccur months later it is called "failed back surgery." Chiropractors can often improve function at these levels to help prevent repeat surgery.
